McKenzie Method®

The McKenzie Method® (also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy, MDT) is an internationally recognized and comprehensive approach developed for the evaluation and treatment of spinal pain.

This approach also can be used to evaluate any joint of the body. Physical therapists use the method to evaluate, classify and treat patients by conducting a thorough history and assessing the patient’s response to repeated movement testing following a well-defined algorithm. The results of this evaluation help the therapist to customize an exercise program specific to the patient’s needs.

The McKenzie Method® encourages patients to become active partners in their recovery. Through posture correction and exercise, the goal is for the patient to be pain free and independent in the management of future symptoms.

Benefits of the McKenzie Method®

  • The evaluation is comprehensive and the exercises are simple.
  • The approach is collaborative between patient and therapist.
  • The approach uses active patient movements and positions to reduce symptoms.
  • The technique can be used to treat both acute and chronic injuries.
  • Results are typically seen quickly (often within the first session).
  • A hands-on approach is used when needed.
  • Patients are encouraged to resume normal activities and to extend and flex the spine after the symptoms are gone.
  • The emphasis is on patient education and empowerment to learn how to manage pain and prevent future episodes
