Optimal Fitness at Good Shepherd is an adaptive fitness center located in Allentown, Pa., that supports the fitness and training goals of community members living with disabilities. A one-of-its-kind offering in the Lehigh Valley region, Optimal Fitness provides a fully accessible gym and warm-water pool for people with spinal cord injury, stroke, neurological conditions (e.g., Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis) and other chronic conditions.
Accessible men’s and women’s locker rooms with bathrooms, showers, mat tables, towels and single-day-use lockers also are available. There are three family-changing rooms for individuals who require dressing assistance from a caregiver. These rooms include a shower, mat table and bathroom area.
Optimal Fitness is open to the public, patients and Good Shepherd employees.

Good Shepherd offers one-on-one sessions, which are scheduled with an exercise physiologist if the session is based in the gym and a recreational therapist if the sessions is scheduled in the pool. Offerings and prices are listed below:
Payment is due at time of service. A scholarship program is available for financial assistance; an application must be filled out and is available upon request.
This is an 8-week aquatic therapy program integrating yoga and Pilates movements in a warm-water environment. The goal is to increase relaxation, release stress, tone muscles and strengthen the body’s core.
When: Tuesdays (5-5:45 p.m.)
Where: Hyland Center pool
Cost: $60 per 8 weeks
This individualized program is guided by a recreational therapist and focuses on stretching and movement techniques using manual pressure. Client and therapist work together to reduce tightness and pain while improving flexibility, relaxation and overall function.
When: Scheduled individually
Where: Hyland Center pool
Cost: $25 per 30-minute session; $40 per 60-minute session
This warm-water joint mobility exercise class is for all individuals with arthritis, fibromyalgia, limited mobility, pain and other medical conditions. Class is designed to ease joint pain and increase mobility.
When: Thursdays (5-5:45 p.m.)

Cost: $10 per session
Good Shepherd’s certified Rock Steady Boxing coaches lead a non-contact exercise program for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Classes have proven that anyone, at any level of Parkinson’s, can lessen their symptoms and lead a healthier and happier life. Our experts focus on exaggerated movements to help better manage physical symptoms. Classes also include speed/heavy bags, jump ropes, gloves and focus mitts. No boxing experience is necessary. (NOTE: Bring your own gloves. Boxers must undergo a physical therapy evaluation prior to admission to the class.)
When: Mondays (4-5:30 p.m.) and Wednesdays (2-3:30 p.m. or 4-5:30 p.m.)
