Areas of Opportunity
Working Within Our Inpatient Hospitals
Volunteers help ensure excellent customer service and a positive patient experience. Welcoming visitors, rounding on patient rooms, restocking supplies, assisting clinical staff, serving as a cuddler (age 18+) for our youngest patients, engaging with patients and serving as ambassadors are a few ways volunteers can support our inpatient services. No experience is necessary.
Serving the Community Within Our Outpatient Locations
Our volunteers offer support to our clinicians by taking on the non-medical aspects of care. Some examples include greeting and directing patients and families, stocking/organizing supplies, cleaning toys (pediatrics), offering hospitality and event setup. No experience is necessary.
Working With Our Long-Term-Care Residents
The residents in our two long-term care homes (Good Shepherd Home – Raker Center and Good Shepherd Home – Bethlehem) are supported by volunteers that help run their weekly activity groups (e.g., crafts, movies, bingo), accompany on community outings, assist with transport for events and therapies, engage with residents, and set up for special events. No experience is necessary.
Volunteering Requirements
Volunteer applications must include references (no immediate family members). Consider listing former employers, colleagues, teachers, professors, advisors or supervisors.
Applicants must complete a phone interview with Good Shepherd’s Volunteer Program prior to completing background clearances.

Clearance Requirements
- PA Criminal Background (acquired by Good Shepherd)
- PA Child Abuse History Clearance (acquired by Good Shepherd)
- FBI Fingerprinting (prepaid registration provided by Good Shepherd)
Medical Requirements
- Record of flu vaccine (flu season is October-March)
- PPD/TB Tine Test (paid by Good Shepherd)
Other Requirements
- Review volunteer orientation manual
- Complete mandatory education
- Confidentiality Agreement Assumption of Risk Waiver
