Ice Hockey Club Donates iPads

The Bethlehem Blast, a youth ice hockey club based in the Lehigh Valley, recently donated two Apple iPads to the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital Pediatric Unit. The iPads will be used to enhance speech function for children who are recovering from accidents, injuries or illnesses.

Each year, the Bethlehem Blast donates the proceeds from a basket raffle held during its annual Christmas party to a local pediatric charity.

“When the children in our organization present these items to the recipients, they get an opportunity to see how fortunate they are,” says Lisa Nolan, special events coordinator, Bethlehem Blast. “It’s a learning experience, and it truly makes a difference in the lives of the children of this community. We are honored and pleased to present these iPads to the children of the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital Pediatric Unit.”

The Apple iPad can be a valuable tool for people with disabilities or individuals recovering from injuries or illnesses, particularly those dealing with speech issues. There are numerous iPad applications that deal with reading, writing and communicating. These applications will be used to engage children at the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital Pediatric Unit as a component of their integrated speech therapy programs.

“The iPad offers many speech-related applications that can be used with our patients,” says Kimberly Graver, speech-language pathologist at the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital Pediatric Unit. “Speech therapy apps promote language, articulation and story recall. Cognitive retraining games also are available.”

The Bethlehem Blast recently merged with the Lehigh Valley Comets to form one of the largest ice hockey clubs in the region. The merged teams will play under the name, Lehigh Valley Flames.

“The larger organization will allow us to expand our charitable initiatives and to increase our commitment to the children of the Lehigh Valley,” says Alec Weiss, co-president of the Lehigh Valley Flames.
