Tyler’s Miracle

When Nancy Zeh shares her son Tyler’s story now, she doesn’t hesitate to end it by saying, “It’s a miracle!” But, there were many times when she simply wasn’t sure how his ordeal would end.

When Tyler was born with multiple congenital heart defects, his parents knew someday he’d need surgery to correct them. Though the first surgery went well, five days later when a pacemaker was being implanted, Tyler stopped breathing. During the twenty-five minutes doctors fought to save his life, Tyler suffered a traumatic brain injury and was left in a coma.

Nancy and her husband were told it was unlikely their son would ever wake up. And, if he did, the prognosis was grim.

When Tyler came to the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital Pediatric Unit in Bethlehem, Pa., he couldn’t wiggle his toes, lift his head or even stick out his tongue. Nancy watched his daily rehab sessions and often wondered, “Will he ever get this?” But, with the patient help of his therapists and a little time, Tyler did!

Nancy’s faith in her son never wavered. And, she’s extremely grateful no one at Good Shepherd gave up on Tyler either. In a few short months – and many small miracles later – Tyler was off his feeding tube, eating a regular diet and walking with a walker. He’s talking more each day and is even reading. Best of all, Tyler is laughing and smiling once more!

Tyler’s miracle recovery exceeded all expectations. But, more and more patients are doing what Tyler did. With the help of cutting-edge technology, rehabilitative therapy and the expertise of the medical team and specialists at Good Shepherd, patients are living fuller, happier lives than has ever been possible before.

Every time Nancy shares her son’s story, she gratefully acknowledges his medical team, but also the many friends of Good Shepherd who donate so generously. Your gifts and good wishes provide support to patients and their families that make a difference in so many ways she finds it hard to list them all.
