Richard Buchin – A Beautiful Mind

Richard Buchin, a resident of the Good Shepherd Home – Conrad W. Raker Center for 16 years, passed away on August 28, 2012. He was 59 years old. Richard was born in Allentown on March 28, the son of Harry and the late Rachel (Gehman) Buchin. He lived with cerebral palsy his entire life but lived a full life where there were “never any limits” by virtue of his keen mind and dogged pursuit of higher education.

Richard graduated from Emmaus High School and went on to get a bachelor’s degree in political science from Messiah College in 1976. Four years later, he earned a master of divinity degree from Eastern Baptist Seminary in Philadelphia, followed by a master’s in library science from Kutztown in 1986. Richard served as tax collector for Macungie from 1973 to 1979.

Deeply spiritual and committed to peace, he volunteered in pastoral care at Good Shepherd and was a volunteer librarian at the Lehigh-Pocono Committee of Concern peace center in Bethlehem. Richard embraced the computer age and enjoyed connecting with people through the Internet.

In reflecting on his son’s life, Richard’s father, Harry wrote: “My son Richard was a great blessing to both his mother and father…As a father, I am much aware of the many challenges Richard encountered throughout his lifetime. However, I also feel there are folks out there who admired or enjoyed meeting him or observing his character …. Richard was ever grateful for the care and friendship he was getting from the staff at Good Shepherd. I humbly thank the Lord for the blessing that my son was to me and others, and I do and will miss him greatly.”
