Safe Sleep Champion

The Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital Pediatric Unit is recognized by the National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program as a “Gold Certified Safe Sleep Champion” for a commitment to best practices and education on infant safe sleep.

Good Shepherd was one of the first hospitals in Pennsylvania to receive the title, taking an active role in encouraging safe sleep education to reduce preventable infant deaths. Every year, there are approximately 3,500 infant sleep-related deaths in the U.S. due to accidental suffocation, strangulation, or undetermined causes during sleep, according to Cribs for Kids®.

Follow these simple recommendations to adhere to Safe Sleep guidelines:

  • Place your infant in a safe sleep environment by themselves. This can be a bassinet, pack-and-play or crib.
  • Your infant should be place on their back to sleep.
  • Room sharing is great! Remember to not co-sleep (have your infant in bed with you). Your infant should have their own safe space.
  • Bumpers, clothing, loose blankets, hats, stuffed animals, pillows or diapers are not recommended to be used or stored in your infants sleep space.
    • Make sure there isn’t anything that has the potential to cover your infant’s face.
  • Please use a firm mattress with a tight fitted sheet.
