If you suffer from conditions such as joint pain, arthritis, carpal tunnel, bursitis, sprains, fibromyalgia or myofascial pain, special LED or laser lights can help to speed your recovery.
Low level light therapy, often referred to as cold laser therapy, is a safe, effective and painless treatment designed to repair tissues, minimize inflammation and reduce pain. It is referred to as “cold” because, thanks to the low level of light that is emitted, patients do not feel any heat during the treatment.
Approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of a variety of conditions, therapists at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation in Bethlehem Township have been using low level light therapy for more than 15 years. We find that the combination of traditional physical therapy, low level light therapy and other techniques, such as Kinesio® Taping, gives patients a boost to recover from injury more quickly.
How Low Level Light Therapy Works
During the treatment, your therapist will use a handheld device to apply low level light to the affected areas, promoting a reaction that promotes cell regeneration. The treatment takes 2 to 15 minutes, depending upon the targeted area. You will feel the device, but there is no sound, pain or temperature sensation.
Conditions Treated
We have found low level light therapy especially helpful with orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions such as:
- Ligament sprains
- Muscle strains
- Tendonitis
- Bursitis
