Grace M. Raker
Grace (Moritz) Raker, 96, passed away on May 2. She was the widow of former Good Shepherd administrator, The Rev. Dr. Conrad Raker, who preceded her in death in 2002. Born in Fullerton on December 14, 1914, Grace attended Cedar Crest College, worked at PPL and was active in local politics. She was a one-time vice-chairwoman of the Lehigh County Republican Committee, and for many years volunteered at the Allentown YWCA, where she also served as former president, the Emmaus Newcomers Club, and the Emmaus Moravian Church.
Stylish with a warm, open smile, Grace was known as a wonderful hostess and remembered for wearing an eye-catching pink hat every Easter at Raker family gatherings.
Grace and Conrad married on March 21, 1986, at Emmaus Moravian Church. Their union brought the two widowers great joy. She honored the Raker family legacy by not only giving of her heart, but also adorned the couple's West End Allentown home with plaques and tributes, pictures of Mama and Papa Raker, and boyhood pictures of Conrad, that she found packed away after she and Conrad wed.
Grace became a beloved figure at Good Shepherd among staff and residents of the home. Those who knew her recall how she accompanied her husband at many special events and shared her gift of song during the Christmas holidays while Conrad played the flute. Her sense of humor is evident in a picture of her at a neighbor's Christmas party sitting on Santa Claus's lap with Conrad beside her seated on Mrs. Claus's lap.
Frank Hyland, vice president of rehabilitation services, recalled Grace's genuine sweetness that endeared her to so many. "She loved the residents and the residents loved her," he said. "She was one of the nicest people I've ever known."
