After a long, hard winter, spring is a welcome change, but with trees budding and grass pollens at a high level, allergy sufferers are on red alert. Patients who also have had vestibular issues, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), may be more prone to develop symptoms (i.e. dizziness and vertigo) during allergy season.
BPPV is the most common disorder of the inner ear in adults. Symptoms of BPPV include:
Stuffiness, often associated with allergies, can increase feelings of dizziness and disorientation. If you suffer from an inner-ear problem, and your symptoms increase during allergy season:
Good Shepherd specializes in evaluating and treating dizziness caused by allergies, aging, autoimmune inner ear disease, head trauma, bacterial and viral infection and more.
Upon entering the Balance and Vestibular Rehabilitation Program, you will undergo a thorough evaluation, which includes questions as to the nature of your dizziness and other symptoms as well as non-invasive testing.
If the evaluation shows you are a candidate for therapy, Good Shepherd therapists may use the Epley Maneuver , also known as canal repositioning, for treatment. As part of the Epley Maneuver, your head is quickly placed over the side of a table (while lying down). A therapist uses various head and body positions to move dizziness-causing debris, so it is no longer free-floating in the semi-circular canal.
In addition to the Epley Maneuver, Good Shepherd uses other tools and services, such as motion sensitivity assessments. Good Shepherd also is a Center for Excellence in the use of technology to enhance lives and augment rehabilitation. In fact, Good Shepherd recently became the first rehabilitation facility on the East Coast and the third in the country to offer the Bertec Balance Advantage™ system that uses virtual reality to evaluate and treat people with sensory processing disorders and brain injuries.
