Expansion Offers More Private Rooms
Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital Pediatric Unit , the only inpatient rehabilitation unit for children in the region, added four private rooms, increasing patient capacity from 16 to 20.
The inpatient unit, located at 2855 Schoenersville Road in Bethlehem, experienced a 15 percent growth in admissions in 2011. The growth was partly due to new, highly specialized programs to help children suffering from complex respiratory issues, children with orthopedic injuries and/or conditions and premature infants who graduate from the neonatal unit but still need specialized care.
“This expansion enables us to provide more private rooms, which affords more parents the opportunity to stay in the room with their children,” says Connie Koch, BSN, RN, clinical nurse manager. “Assisting families with the transition from acute care to home is vital, and having the parent at the bedside to participate in all aspects of care allows us to assess the family’s needs and readiness for discharge.”
Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital Pediatric Unit offers acute, physician-directed rehabilitation care for children with acute and chronic pulmonary disorders, amputation, brain injury, burns, complex wounds, feeding/swallowing disorders, multi-trauma injuries, oncology, spinal cord injury and stroke.
