If you cannot rely on speech alone to communicate, Good Shepherd’s Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Program can help you express yourself in ways other than speech.
The Augmentative and Alternative Communication Program will evaluate you and connect you with an appropriate assistive technology, from simple picture or letter boards to highly sophisticated speech-generating devices.
Even if you have a physical impairment, you may be a candidate for the AAC program. Our expert therapists can help you compensate for a physical impairment through the use of switches, infrared head control, eye-gaze technology and other leading-edge control devices.
Good Shepherd is home to a large number of PT, OT and SLP licensed certified assistive technology professionals. Our expert therapists will design a comprehensive, customized program to meet your goals. This, plus the use of state-of-the-art augmentative and alternative communication devices, can help to maximize your level of function and independence.
Please note: As of January 2001, communications systems are considered durable medical equipment and are covered by most insurance carriers. Medical guidelines state that secondary insurance/funding sources should cover the remaining 20 percent.
