The Good Shepherd Pediatrics Assistive Technology Program provides state-of-the-art-technology interventions to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities.

Areas of Assistive Technology:

Augmentative and Alternative Communication ( AAC)
For children with limited or no verbal skills, Good Shepherd offers a variety of methods to increase functional communication. When used along with natural speech, objects, pictures, signs or speech-generating devices can produce positive outcomes for children.
Adaptive Computer Hardware / Software
The ability to use a computer can be important to educational and social success. For children who cannot access computers in the traditional way, Good Shepherd therapists offer various assistive technology solutions. Software programs also are available to promote language development, literacy, writing skills and cognitive development, and to help remediate for visual deficits.
EADLs (Environment Control System Aids for Daily Living)
Good Shepherd offers evaluation and training for the use of assistive technologies that may help children be more independent in their homes. These assistive technologies can help with everyday tasks, such as turning the lights off and on or operating a television or radio. More advanced EADLs are also available to control a greater range of devices within the home.
Adaptive Wheelchair Seating and Mobility
Children who require wheelchairs or mobility systems are referred to the Good Shepherd Wheelchair and Adaptive Seating Clinic at the RJ Foundation Mobility Center. There, children are evaluated for proper seating and positioning, which provides maximum safety and comfort. Children and their parents are then trained on the features and proper use of their mobility system.
Switch-Adapted Toys
Play is an integral part of a child’s development. Good Shepherd’s Pediatric Rehabilitation Program provides switch-adapted toys, as well as many options for switch access. Expert therapists evaluate the child’s position and the available methods of switch access. Then, a recommendation for the appropriate type and placement of switch is made to the child and his or her parents.
