Parkinson's Disease Wellness Programs

At Good Shepherd, we know that each individual with Parkinson’s disease (PD) has unique abilities and medical needs. In addition to outpatient rehabilitation, Good Shepherd offers exercise programs to help individuals with PD maintain health and function. These programs provide fitness, but also improve confidence, quality of life and energy levels.

Why Exercise?

• Intense exercise is the only intervention shown to potentially slow the progression of PD.
• Exercise improves functional mobility, safety, quality of life, confidence and energy levels.
• Learning a new task leads to the development of new neuronal connections (neuroplasticity).

Dance Program
Improve balance, coordination and flexibility through dance. Classes are modified for all levels of participation and include seated, standing and walking dance routines. A wide range of dance styles from ballet to tango ensures there is something for everyone. All classes are led by therapists with a background in dance. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30 - 5:00 p.m.

Get S.M.A.R.T. Aquatic Program
This unique group exercise program is designed specifically for individuals with PD. A recreational therapist leads this group in a warm water therapy pool. Accessible locker rooms, family changing rooms and two pool lifts are available. Tuesdays and Mondays, 1 - 1:45 p.m.

Boxing Program
The program features boxing-inspired, non-contact exercise training specifically for people with PD. Led by certified staff, participants train on boxing equipment including heavy bags, jump ropes, gloves and focus mitts. PD is the opponent. Fight back against Parkinson’s. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30 - 5:00 p.m.

Treadmill Program
This fun, upbeat class consists of treadmill-based exercise. Treadmills, recumbent steppers and ellipticals are available for use. All classes are supervised by a trained exercise physiologist or therapist who will devise and advance a specific program that is tailored to each participant’s ability. By appointment

All classes are $8/session and are located in the Good Shepherd Health & Technology Center. Anyone interested will receive a full evaluation to assess needs and skill level prior to starting a program.
