Good Shepherd Work Services Honors Supporters/Clients at Annual Luncheon
Just Born, Inc., and Sodexho Are Among Honorees
Allentown—On Friday, November 16, Good Shepherd’s Work Services Division, which offers employment and job training opportunities to people with disabilities, honored two of its partners from the business community and two clients at its annual luncheon. The event was held at Good Shepherd Work Services in Allentown.
Good Shepherd’s Work Services Divisions have been providing employment opportunities for people with disabilities since 1958. Work Services offers transitional employment services, a workshop, temporary employment services and operates three thrift stores.
Customer of the Year – Just Born, Inc., of Bethlehem
For nearly a decade, Just Born, Inc., has been utilizing Good Shepherd Work Services to package, price and label an assortment of the company’s candies, such as Mike & Ike’s, Zours, Hot Tamales and Marshmallow Peeps. Last year, Just Born’s client-friendly projects provided approximately 5,000 hours of employment for Work Services clients, including those with physical and cognitive disabilities.
“Just Born is being honored for the work it provides to the clients of Good Shepherd Work Services, as well as the community spirit that the company has exhibited for more than 80 years in the Lehigh Valley,” says Greg Cunningham, director of production at Good Shepherd Work Services.
Employer of the Year – Sodexho at Moravian Academy, in Bethlehem
For the past two years, Sodexho at Moravian Academy has been a valuable resource for Good Shepherd Work Service’s Transitional Employment Services. Sodexho has placed several clients in positions performing kitchen utility work. This work environment has helped individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities gain the dignity and pride that comes with gainful employment.
Last year, 248 individuals with disabilities participated in the Good Shepherd Work Services Transitional Employment Services Program.
Workshop Employee of the Year – Linda Broadhurst
Since 1958, Good Shepherd Work Services has been providing employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities in its workshop. In the workshop, clients and direct hires stuff envelopes, assemble packages and more for such companies as Binney and Smith and Just Born, Inc.
Linda Broadhursrt of Allentown first came to Good Shepherd in 1987 as a direct hire, an individual without a disability hired to supplement the work of clients with disabilities. For two decades, she has been a leader in the workshop and a key component to Good Shepherd Work Services’ mailroom operations.
Last year, Good Shepherd Work Services employed approximately 110 individuals in its workshop, 75 of whom have a physical or cognitive disability.
Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network of Allentown, Pennsylvania
Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network, based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, is a nationally recognized rehabilitation leader, offering a continuum of care for people with physical and cognitive disabilities and specializing in assistive and rehabilitation technology. More than 36,600 people come to Good Shepherd each year for specialized programs in stroke, orthopedics, brain injury, spinal cord injury, pediatrics, amputation and more. Good Shepherd provides rehabilitation services in 7 eastern Pennsylvania counties. Good Shepherd operates 14 outpatient sites, 4 inpatient sites, a long-term acute care hospital, 2 long-term care homes for people with severe disabilities, an independent living facility, a Work Services division that provides employment training and job placement and a lifestyle products store called Rehability. Good Shepherd Penn Partners, a partnership of Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network and the University of Pennsylvania Health System, will provide post-acute care in the Philadelphia region beginning July 2008. Good Shepherd was founded in 1908 when The Rev. John and Estella Raker invited a disabled orphan named Viola into their Allentown, Pennsylvania, home.
