Good Shepherd Signs Management Contract with Wayne Memorial Hospital in Wayne County
Good Shepherd Now Provides Care at 27 Sites in 7 Counties

Allentown—Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network has signed a five-year contract to manage a new 14-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit at Wayne Memorial Hospital (WMH) in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. The deal means that Good Shepherd now provides inpatient and/or outpatient physical rehabilitation care at 27 sites in 7 counties throughout eastern Pennsylvania.

The relationship between Good Shepherd and WMH, which will commence in June of this year, is similar to the contract that Good Shepherd has with Easton Hospital. Good Shepherd will provide management staff for the WMH unit, including a medical director, along with program and operations development and census-building support.

WMH is providing the 12,000-square-foot unit, equipment and furnishings and all other staff, including physical and occupational therapists. The unit will be located on the top floor of a new building addition on the WMH campus.

The partnership arose out of WMH’s desire to contract with an outside organization to manage its new inpatient rehabilitation unit.

“We expect our partnership to benefit both of our organizations and most of all, our patients,” says David Hoff, chief executive officer, WMH. “We chose to work with Good Shepherd in large part because of its reputation for excellence in the rehabilitation field, and we look forward to working together for many years to come.”

The new unit will offer specialized rehabilitation care for people of all ages who require physical, occupational, speech and other herapies for a variety of conditions, including arthritis, stroke, hip and knee replacement, brain injury, spinal cord injury and amputations.

“This agreement will provide residents of Wayne and Pike counties with better access to high-quality inpatient rehabilitation services,” says Harry Ting, Ph.D., senior vice president for Strategic Planning, Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network.

Scott Epstein, M.D., a physiatrist with Northeast Rehabilitation Associates and a long-time member of the Wayne Memorial medical staff has accepted the position of medical director for the new unit.

Patients in need of rehabilitation services may be referred to the new unit at WMH by a physician, insurance company, discharge planner/social worker, home health agency or family member or through self-referral. Wayne Memorial already offers outpatient rehabilitation services, including cardiac rehabilitation, in Honesdale and Milford, Pennsylvania.

Hoff notes that both Good Shepherd and Wayne Memorial have the same goal in their rehabilitation services: to help the patient return to a maximum level of independence. “Our new inpatient unit will expand our services in new and diverse ways,” Hoff explains. “But we sincerely believe that our collaboration with Good Shepherd, a nationally recognized specialist in rehabilitation programs, can only spell success.”

“Good Shepherd now has a presence in three acute-care hospitals in eastern Pennsylvania,” says Sally Gammon, CHE, president and CEO, Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network. “This expansion into Wayne County is in line with Good Shepherd’s strategic direction to diversify geographically.”

WMH is a 98-bed community hospital that part of Wayne Memorial Health System. The system provides a variety of services, including long-term care at two facilities, home health care, family and primary medical care and durable medical equipment.
