Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)
| Lymphedema Management |

Part of Good Shepherd's Lymphedema Management Program, Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a precise and intricate massage technique designed to move excess fluid from tissue and promote normal functioning of the lymphatic system. Part of a comprehensive treatment plan called Complex Physical Decongestive Therapy (CPDT), MLD is combined with a program of compression bandaging, remedial exercise, and patient education for self-care after discharge. Good Shepherd offers CPDT and MLD services through our physical and occupational therapy programs.

Manual Lymph Drainage can be used to treat the following:

  • Lymphedema after mastectomy
  • Lymphostatic edema of the extremities
  • Primary lymphedema
  • Edema of traumatic origin (hematoma, sprains, joint dislocations, ligament lesions, torn muscles, treatment of fractures, etc.)
  • Scar treatment including post-cosmetic surgery and oral surgery
  • Rheumatic illnesses (i.e., lupus erythematosus)
  • Local chronic inflammation in the respiratory tract
  • Dermatological indications (acne, eczema, rosacea, etc.)
  • Tendinitis
  • Fibrositis
  • Sinusitis
  • Bursitis
  • Arthritis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
