At Good Shepherd Home—Allentown and Good Shepherd Home—Bethlehem, life isn't only about therapies and medical services. It's also about fun, about trying and learning new things, and about reaching inside yourself and discovering talents you never thought you had.
Community Integration
- Participation in community activities—via Good Shepherd's transportation services, therapeutic recreation trips, or community paratransit services—designed to promote community awareness, enhance leisure lifestyles, and improve quality of life.
- Good Shepherd-sponsored shuttle transports residents to local malls and restaurants by themselves or accompanied by family, friends, or volunteers at least one day a week.
- Residents have visited the Philadelphia Zoo, Hershey Chocolate World, the Franklin Institute, Lancaster County, Longwood Gardens, professional Philadelphia sporting events, Ellis Island, Camden Aquarium, the Harrisburg Farm Show, the Reading outlets, Pocono Mountain attractions, special holiday events, and much more.
Cerebral Palsy Sports Team
- Selected residents participate in bocce, bowling, and track and field events.
- Team competes in local, regional, and national competitions.
- Member of the United States Cerebral Palsy Athletic Association.
- Coached by therapeutic recreation, occupational, and physical therapists.
Performance Programs
- Provide residents with opportunities for creative expression through music and dance.
- Therapeutic dance group; private piano, drum, and electronic keyboard classes; and tone bell choir and resident choir.
- A joint effort of the therapeutic recreation, rehabilitation nursing, occupational therapy, and physical therapy departments.
Prevocational Programs
- Computer-based work tasks including data entry, word processing and spreadsheet operations, graphics and text-based work tasks, and accounting programs.
- Assembly line work tasks including filing, stamping, collating, folding, shredding, and packaging tasks.
- Small business development including the facility gift shop run by residents.
- Resident mail sorting and delivery.
- Wheelchair cleaning group.
- Reception desk coverage.
Technology Programs
- Use of electronic devices and applied technology to increase ability to participate in vocational, educational, leisure, and daily living activities.
- Interdisciplinary effort of the speech and language, occupational therapy, and physical therapy departments.
- Include computer access modes; environmental controls to fully operate small appliances, televisions, telephones, and other electrical appliances; power mobility; and augmentative-communication devices.
Relaxation Group
- Provides residents with tools to achieve body and mind relaxation, stress reduction, pain relief, and spasticity control.
- Incorporates use of breathing techniques, imagery, physical modalities, and alternate positioning.
- Jointly run by physical therapy and social work service departments.
Therapeutic Pool Group
- Provides opportunity for active movement, relaxation, and gross motor tasks in soothing aquatic environment.
- One-on-one supervision in warm-water indoor pool.
- Jointly run by physical therapy and occupational therapy departments.
Horseback Riding
- Therapeutic horseback riding program offered to residents during summer months.
- A western riding program at a local riding stable uses a registered therapeutic horseback riding instructor and specially trained horses.
- Provides a leisure riding experience with many therapeutic benefits.
