Local Philanthropists Receive Good Shepherd's Raker Memorial Awards3/5/2010
Harold and Arlene Fabian and The Rev. Harold S. Weiss Are Honored at Event
Allentown, PA – The 25th annual Raker Memorial Awards today were given to Harold and Arlene Fabian of Northampton and The Rev. Harold S. Weiss, M.Div., of Allentown. Long-time Good Shepherd employee The Rev. William M. Horn, M.Div., of Allentown, received the annual Raker Spirit Award.
Sally Gammon, F.A.C.H.E., president and CEO, Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network, presented the awards during a ceremony held at Grace Lutheran Church, Allentown. The annual ceremony commemorates the anniversary of Good Shepherd’s founding in 1908.
The Raker Memorial Awards recognize members of the community who, through philanthropy and volunteerism, honor the legacy of Good Shepherd’s founders, The Rev. John H. and D. Estella Raker and their son, The Rev. Dr. Conrad W. Raker.
Raker Memorial Award Recipients: Harold and Arlene Fabian, of Northampton
Harold and Arlene Fabian have supported Good Shepherd for 25 years. Their gifts have helped to grow the Good Shepherd Pediatric Rehabilitation Program and to expand access to children with physical and cognitive disabilities. Most recently, Mr. and Mrs. Fabian supported the opening of the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital Pediatric Unit, the first of its kind in the Lehigh Valley.
Mr. and Mrs. Fabian have been married since 1941. They spent 45 years as full-time grain and dairy farmers. Their careers began with a small team of horses and a 30-acre farm in 1943. By 1946, they were operating a 300-acre farm with more than 100 cattle. This labor of love positioned Mr. and Mrs. Fabian to support their community in many ways, including through the philanthropic support of Good Shepherd.
Raker Memorial Award Recipient: The Rev. Harold S. Weiss, of Allentown
The Rev. Harold S. Weiss has supported Good Shepherd for decades as a donor and volunteer. In 1996, Rev. Weiss was elected to the Good Shepherd Board of Trustees, where he served for 9 years, helping to lead Good Shepherd through the largest period of growth in its history. During this time, Rev Weiss served on the Governance, Strategic Planning, Joint Conference and Executive committees. In 2008, Rev. Weiss was named a lifetime Trustee Emeritus of the Good Shepherd Board of Trustees.
Rev. Weiss is Bishop Emeritus of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, having served as Bishop of the Synod from 1983 to 1996, and as Assistant to the Bishop from 1969 to 1983. Rev. Weiss is also a Life Trustee of Muhlenberg College, and he serves on the board of directors of the Institute for Jewish-Christian Understanding at Muhlenberg College.
Raker Spirit Award Recipient: The Rev. William M. Horn, of Allentown
The Rev. William M. Horn, Good Shepherd’s Director of Pastoral Care, is the recipient of the 2010 Raker Spirit Award. The award is given annually to the Good Shepherd employee who most embodies the spirit of the Raker Family.
Rev. Horn has been with Good Shepherd since 1980. During that time, he has established a reputation as a caring counselor and advocate for individuals with functional limitations. He has worked diligently to help Good Shepherd’s patients and residents, along with his colleagues, find spiritual nourishment, and he has worked to inspire individuals with disabilities to fulfill their potential. Rev. Horn is retiring from Good Shepherd at the end of February 2010.
