Good Shepherd's Industrial Rehabilitation Program is structured to help injured employees return to work as soon as possible. Through a professional team approach, industrial rehabilitation specialists at Good Shepherd work closely with each patient to provide state-of-the-art rehabilitative care in a number of specialty areas:
Work Hardening
Designed to increase physical capacities in relation to client job demands, work hardening includes aerobic conditioning, strength training, job simulation, body mechanics training, and stretching. Prior to program launch, each patient is evaluated by a licensed occupational therapist; program frequency and duration is at the discretion of the treating physician and therapy staff.
Healthy Back School
This one-hour informal program provides individuals and small groups with information about maintaining a healthy back. Content includes discussion of general anatomy, proper lifting techniques, and body mechanics as well as a demonstration of those techniques. Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE)
A Functional Capacity Evaluation is a detailed assessment of a patient's consistency of effort and ability to return to work. This four-hour evaluation, performed by a licensed therapist, includes an intake review, a musculoskeletal screening, and a final evaluation report.
Post-Offer Lifting Assessment
This assessment is performed as part of a post-offer physical evaluation and is used to determine a patient's ability to meet the lifting and carrying requirements of a specific job based on the U.S. Department of Labor Physical Demand Levels of Work (sedentary, light, medium, heavy, very heavy). A brief review of proper body mechanics as related to job demands may also be included.
Ergonomics
Good Shepherd's Ergonomics Program assists companies in achieving compliance with OSHA regulations. Specialty programs include the following:
Flexibility/Stretching Education
During this on-site education, employees are taught the importance of stretching and shown self-stretches that can help reduce the risks of overuse injuries. Stretches can be tailored for the primary muscle groups used for specific job duties.
Job Analysis
A thorough study of the client's workstation is completed, followed by a written report outlining risk factors and recommendations for improving the ergonomic design of the workstation in an effort to reduce strain on affected body parts.
Job Risk Analysis
Following work environment observation, a Good Shepherd therapist provides a description of physical requirements used to accomplish work tasks and makes recommendations on how to reduce the impact of problematic postures and motions. Job risk analysis is ideal for helping companies recognize and reduce the stressors responsible for cumulative trauma disorders.
