Designs for Life Home Modification Program

Home ModificationDesigns for Life is a program where a certified aging-in-place specialist provides a comprehensive design plan for individuals looking to function safely and independently in their homes.

A certified specialist visits the home of a client and develops an individualized home modification plan. The plan is structured to meet the needs of the client in the most aesthetically pleasing manner.

Some examples of design plans include:

  • Home safety and fall prevention
  • Pre-construction recommendations
  • Remodeling/Renovation projects
  • Aging in place consultation
  • Lifespan design
  • Home modification and adaptation
  • Universal design plans

Home ModificationFor each home modification evaluation, the certified specialist will complete a home visit and an interview with the client. Designs will include a functional, cognitive, and environmental assessment. The therapist will develop a comprehensive, leading-edge design plan, which draws from knowledge in:

  • Occupational therapy
  • Adaptive equipment
  • Assistive technology
  • Ergonomics
  • Accessible design
  • Building contracting
  • Architectural products

Once clients are provided with a home modification plan, they can choose to implement all or some of the recommendations. The work can be done by whatever contractor the client chooses. Good Shepherd's REHABILITY! will also be available to facilitate the work by acquiring materials, subcontracting construction, and guaranteeing results.

Samantha BogertCertified Aging-In-Place Specialist
Samantha Bogert, O.T., recently became a certified aging-in-place specialist. The prestigious credential means that she is one of the building industry’s top professionals with knowledge specific to home modifications for aging in place. She is trained in the technical, business management, and customer service skills essential to the home modification industry.

The CAPS program is administered by the Remodelors Council of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), in collaboration with the NAHB Research Center, NAHB Seniors Housing Council, and the AARP.

In addition to her CAPS certification, Samantha is an occupational therapist. As an O.T., she has unique insight and understands the relationship between an individual’s environment and its effect on the way he or she performs daily activities. She understands the progression of diseases and disabilities, and designs home modification plans that are adaptable throughout the client’s lifespan.
