Good Shepherd Inpatient Feeding Program - Patient Case Studies & Screening Tool

Patient History:

2-week-old male, post-surgical repair of trachea-esophageal fistula

Condition Upon Referral:

  • Recovering from fistula repair surgery    
  • Required enteral feeding

Condition Upon Discharge:

Transitioned to 100% oral feeding without need for home care

Alternative Without Inpatient Rehabilitation:

  • Ongoing enteral feeding and equipment
  • Ongoing visits to gastroenterologist
     

Patient History:

11-year-old female, lifetime of outpatient therapy without progress

Condition Upon Referral:

  • G-Tube dependent   
  • Chronic lung disease           
  • Developmental delays
  • GERD
  • Failure to thrive

Condition Upon Discharge:

Transitioned to 100% oral feeding after two weeks of inpatient rehabilitation

Alternative Without Inpatient Rehabilitation:

  • Nurse to accompany to school to administer tube feedings

Ongoing outpatient feeding therapy
