Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network Improves Safety and Medication Accuracy with B. Braun Medical Inc.’s Industry-Leading, Safety Infusion ‘Smart Pumps’
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – World-class care doesn’t have to be a world away.
That is the message from two Lehigh Valley healthcare leaders, Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network (GSRN) and B. Braun Medical Inc. (B. Braun), which are combining their knowledge, expertise and innovative technology to enhance the delivery of rehabilitation services in the community.
Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network became the first health-care network in Pennsylvania to deploy new B. Braun infusion therapy technologies designed to improve patient safety and help reduce medication errors. The B. Braun products include Outlook® ES “Smart Pumps” and SPACE® Infusion Pump System.
“B. Braun’s leading-edge infusion pumps continue Good Shepherd’s commitment to patient safety,” said Sally Gammon, FACHE, Good Shepherd’s President and CEO. “Good Shepherd is dedicated to investing in technology that helps us provide the very best rehabilitation care for our patients, helping them return to their highest level of function and independence.”
The collaboration between the rehabilitation network and the leading medical device manufacturer results from a joint commitment to patient safety and quality care shared by Gammon and B. Braun Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Caroll H. Neubauer.
“B. Braun serves hospitals and health-care professionals worldwide, so we’re extremely proud to help Good Shepherd provide safe, effective and high-quality care here at home – our home – in the Lehigh Valley,” said Neubauer. “Health care in our area has taken an important step forward with the continuing expansion of the high-quality services Good Shepherd provides and with innovative medical technology B. Braun employees develop.”
Neubauer said the Outlook® ES Safety Infusion System in use at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network helps ensure that patients receive the correct medication in the correct dose from a clinician authorized to administer it. The system also alerts health-care professionals when dose limits are exceeded.
B. Braun’s Outlook® ES is designed to be safe, accurate and easy-to-use. The technology promotes safety with customized drug libraries that allow health-care professionals to administer the appropriate doses of medication without numerous programming steps that frequently lead to errors. As Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network continues to raise the bar of patient safety and expand services, the Outlook® ES offers a scalable, flexible design that will enable it to meet future needs. The system can be easily upgraded with additional safety features such as barcoding technology that provides an additional measure of protection against medication errors.
Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network also implemented B. Braun’s SPACE® Infusion Pump System, which is designed for use in adult and pediatric facilities where space may be limited and safety is critical. SPACE® measures nine inches by six inches and weighs only three pounds. It is easily transported and easily fits in a range of care settings.
Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network facilities that use the new pumps include Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital-Allentown, Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital Pediatric Unit and Good Shepherd Specialty Hospital, both in Bethlehem, and Good Shepherd Rehabilitation at Pocono Medical Center.
