For Volunteers: Volunteer Opportunities

Good Shepherd, the region’s leader in rehabilitation and long-term care, is in need of volunteers to help us continue our 100-year tradition of quality care. Students, professionals, homemakers and retired men and women are all encouraged to pledge their time to help make the lives of our patients, residents and staff a little brighter. There are many opportunities to join our family of outstanding and dedicated volunteers at one of our various sites in Eastern Pennsylvania. Whether it’s accompanying residents on community outings or pastoral care, our volunteer staff is a valuable asset that allows Good Shepherd to provide compassionate care to those who need it most.
Clerical/Secretarial Support
Volunteers provide clerical support to requesting departments at Good Shepherd. Tasks may include filing, data entry, pulling charts, copying and making phone calls.
Community Outings
Trips from The Good Shepherd Home at Conrad W. Raker Center, The Good Shepherd Home -- Bethlehem and Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital -- Allentown offer volunteers the opportunity to help residents and patients enjoy various community events. Volunteer assistance allows residents and patients to participate in shopping and other interesting trips throughout the year.
Occupational and Physical Therapies
Positions are available that give volunteers the opportunity to assist therapists with setting up and transporting patients to and from therapies in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Pastoral Care
Volunteers read Scripture to individual residents as requested, greet new rehabilitation patients and lead prayer groups. Assistance is needed to transport residents and patients to and from morning and afternoon worship services, as well as transport residents via Good Shepherd vans to local services of the resident’s choice.
Pediatrics
Volunteers assist with pediatric groups, by entertaining and working with young patients during and between therapies. They also provide care for siblings while parents are involved with patient care.
Personal Volunteers
Volunteers are needed to visit with and provide companionship to residents on a regular basis. Personal volunteers have the opportunity to accompany residents on outings and special occasions, as well as assist with activities and needs in their Good Shepherd home.
Receptionists
Volunteer receptionists are needed to answer phones, take messages, greet visitors and give directions on campus.
Recreational Assistants
Volunteers provide service for the therapeutic recreation department’s special activities. These include field trips as planned by the recreation department and presented in the monthly calendar mailed to volunteers.
Rehab Messengers
Individuals are needed to help welcome new patients, distribute ice water, assist with menu selections and transport patients to therapies. Volunteers also get supplies and assist patients as requested.
Resident Assistants
Volunteers are needed to visit residents and perform small tasks such as reading, correspondence, sorting personal belongings, playing board games and in-house transporting.
Sewing for Residents
There is a need to label, mend and alter clothes to meet specific needs. Work can be taken home or done on campus.
Transporters
Volunteers are needed to escort patients and residents who use wheelchairs to and from activities, therapies, meals, church services and recreation events.
Van Drivers
A great need exists for volunteers to drive Good Shepherd’s accessible vans. Volunteers assist in transporting our residents to church and on trips into the Lehigh Valley. No special license is required and our transportation department will aid in training. Insurance is provided.
