If you suffer from the pain and fatigue associated with fibromyalgia, Good Shepherd’s expert care team can help manage your symptoms.
Levels of care:
Fibromyalgia is a syndrome that is characterized by widespread body pain, which often arises in the muscles or ligaments. Other symptoms of fibromyalgia include fatigue, sleep problems and depression.
According to the National Fibromyalgia Association, seven- to ten-million Americans suffer from fibromyalgia. Women are much more likely to develop the disorder than men, and the risk of fibromyalgia increases with age.
Fibromyalgia Services available at Good Shepherd:
- Physical or occupational therapy can address muscle pain, loss of function and endurance issues. At Good Shepherd, each patient undergoes a comprehensive therapy evaluation and a personalized program is developed to address his or her functional impairments. A comprehensive treatment plan may include stretching and strengthening exercises, pain reduction, manual therapy or massage, education in disease management and instruction in a home program.
- Aquatic therapy in a warm-water environment can help people with fibromyalgia relax and exercise. Patients may participate in various programs to enhance flexibility and endurance. Good Shepherd’s Health and Technology Center, 850 South 5th Street, Allentown, offers aquatic self-pay maintenance programs including group exercise classes, tai chi, relaxation and water walking..
- A regular exercise routine has been shown to help alleviate the chronic fluctuating symptoms of fibromyalgia. At Good Shepherd, discharge planning includes instruction in a home program to maintain or improve muscle conditioning. Ongoing aquatic/pool exercises also may be recommended. Self-pay fitness programs are also available at most sites so that past patients can continue to exercise with the same equipment used during therapy.
- Massage therapy can supplement a physical therapy program to help directly target tender areas while providing relaxation.
