Incidence of Traumatic Brain Injury

  • 1.5 million Americans sustain traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year
  • Each year, 80,000 Americans experience the onset of long-term disability following TBI
  • More than 50,000 people die every year as a result of TBI
  • The risk of TBI is highest among adolescents and young adults
  • Every 21 seconds, one person in the U.S. sustains TBI
  • An estimated 5.3 million Americans—a little more than 2% of the U.S. population—currently live with disabilities resulting from TBI

Incidence of Brain Injury in Pennsylvania

  • 245,000 Pennsylvanians are living with brain injury
  • Over 41,000 visit an emergency room each year for mild brain injury
  • 7,800 are hospitalized annually with moderate to severe brain injury
  • Approximately 2,700 experience permanent disability each year as the result of brain injury
  • 2,000 die annually from brain injury
