Physical Therapy Offers Benefits for Patients Undergoing Cancer Treatment
“Burning, tingling, sharp pains, numbness, tightness.” These are often words used to describe peripheral neuropathy – a painful condition that occurs after chemotherapy treatment. This condition can occur in the hands and/or feet and severely limits patients’ activities, such as walking, driving, climbing stairs and completing tasks with their hands.
“I’ve lost my get up and go.” This phrase is often used by people during and after cancer treatment to describe a disabling condition called cancer-related fatigue.
Many oncology patients think that these are symptoms that they just have to endure. However, there are options to help alleviate both fatigue and peripheral neuropathy.
Physical and occupational therapy have been proven to have therapeutic benefits for decreasing peripheral neuropathy symptoms and cancer-related fatigue as well as improving conditioning and balance. Case studies of patients with peripheral neuropathy after chemotherapy show they benefit from therapies that include electrical stimulation and vibration therapy. In fact, these treatments have been shown to significantly reduce pain levels as well as to increase patients’ activity levels.
Clinically proven research also shows that appropriate amounts of prescribed exercise and activity can decrease the effects of cancer-related fatigue, especially when done before the condition sets in.
