How to Stay in Shape During the Winter
With the start of a new year, many people are prioritizing their resolutions. Topping most people’s lists are the resolutions to lose weight or get in shape. But as the winter months wane, many resolutions fall by the wayside simply because of the chilly weather. This doesn’t need to happen, as there are many ways to stay in shape even during the cold winter days.
Don’t let the cold weather keep you indoors. Try a new sport such as downhill skiing, snowboarding or cross-country skiing. Find a local ski resort and sign up for lessons. I’m a ski instructor at Jack Frost and Big Boulder Ski Area in Blakeslee, Pa., where I teach adaptive skiing. In my spare time I also like to free-ski. Cross-country skiing, which I hope to try for the first time this year, is very low impact and gives a good cardiovascular workout.
If you don’t want to venture out in the cold for a workout, check into your local gym for classes such as group cycling, Zumba dance classes, Pilates or yoga.
Dust off that treadmill or stationary bike in your home and start working out. You can also look into a local club to meet with a running or cycling group. It is much more encouraging and fun when you have someone else to workout with.
I also enjoy doing cross-training with workout DVDs, such as Jillian Michael’s workout DVDs, P90x, etc. Cross-training is an excellent way to help prevent injuries and keep your muscles strong.
If your goal is to lose weight, look into consulting with a dietitian or a nutritionist on how you can lose weight with a special diet combined with exercise. You can even speak with an exercise physiologist at your local physical therapy clinic.
Try to do at least 30 minutes of exercise at least three to four times a week. It may be difficult to get started but keep reminding yourself how good you will feel afterward. Plus, you’ll feel better knowing you’ve actually stuck with one of your New Year’s resolutions. Another encouraging way to keep motivated is to keep track of your workouts. Write down on a calendar what you did that day; at the end of each week, give yourself a pat on the back for your accomplishments!
