Paralympics to Showcase World’s Best Athletes with Disabilities

If you have seen South Africa’s Oscar Pistorius, a double amputee, run at the Olympics, you know that people with disabilities are among the world’s best athletes. Those athletes will take center stage in London when the Paralympics begin on August 29.  We’re not sure Queen Elizabeth II will parachute from the skies, but she will attend the opening ceremony. Adaptive Rowers Participate in World Championships

Recently, I had the honor of serving as chief classifer for adaptive rowing at the World Rowing Championships, held on beautiful Lake Bled in Slovenia. The competition included five adaptive rowing events, four of which were qualification events for the Paralympics. One of the great things about most rowing competitions is that the adaptive rowing events are included with the “able-bodied” events. Most other sports hold separate adaptive and able-bodied world championship competitions. Read more »

Enjoying Sports If You Have a Disability

Imagine feeling the spray of water in your face as you kayak down a roaring river, or feeling the wind whip against your skin as you ski down a snow-covered mountain. Sports, such as kayaking, skiing, basketball or cycling, bring great joy to many people’s lives.  People living with disabilities, such as paralysis or amputation, are no different.
