Amputation Rehabilitation

If you or a loved one has had an amputation and are seeking to regain your functional independence, Good Shepherd’s Amputee Rehabilitation Program can help.  At Good Shepherd, our goal is to help maximize your independence and regain a productive, rewarding lifestyle.

Levels of care:

• If you are stable and ready to leave an acute-care hospital, but are not well enough to go home or to a rehabilitation hospital, our long-term acute care hospital may be appropriate for you.
• Inpatient pre- and post-prosthetic amputee rehabilitation for adults is available at Good Shepherd’s four inpatient rehabilitation locations for adults. Here you will receive three hours of physical or occupational therapy each day.
• Inpatient traumatic amputation rehabilitation for children is available at the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital Pediatric Unit.
• If you are more advanced in your rehabilitation program, Good Shepherd offers numerous outpatient rehabilitation facilities to continue your progress.
• If you can't make it to one of Good Shepherd's outpatient locations, we provide in-home therapy services throughout our service area.
• Good Shepherd's outpatient Pediatrics Program is available for children with amputation.
• The interdisciplinary Prosthetic and Orthotic Clinic is available on Tuesdays and every first and third Wednesday of the month on an outpatient basis. The Clinic is located at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital - Allentown.
• Many of Good Shepherd’s wellness programs, including fitness opportunities, home modification and more, are appropriate for individuals with amputation.

Good Shepherd's Pre- and Post-Prosthetic Amputee Rehabilitation Program specializes in evaluating and treating:

• Gait issues
• Joint contracture prevention
• Pain control
• Phantom limb
• Physical impairments as a result of amputation including difficulty walking, working or performing tasks of daily living
• Residual limb healing and management including reducing swelling and improving strength, endurance and range of motion
• Residual limb desensitization

Good Shepherd's Pre- and Post-Prosthetic Amputee Rehabilitation Program provides:

• Education regarding skin hygiene and prosthesis usage
• Evaluation of patients of all ages
• Facilitation of community re-entry
• Facilitation of independence prior to arrival of prosthesis
• Individualized prosthetic and orthotic evaluation and prescription
• Instruction in proper prosthesis use for walking, transfers, vocational use and daily living
• Nutrition education
• Physical medicine
• Physical, occupational and recreational therapy
• Prosthesis management including wearing tolerance and volume (sock) management
• Prosthesis prescription and fit evaluation
• Psychological and peer support, through the Lehigh Valley Hospital Amputee Support Group
• Social work services
